Shopping for a washing machine isn’t as simple as it once was. Our parents had only one option – top loading and white. Today’s washers come in a rainbow of colors, offer automatic product dispensers, multiple cycles and even steam cleaning. So before you start dreaming about adding a supersize washer (and companion dryer) to your house, measure your laundry room space (and your doorways), weigh your capacity needs against front- and top-load performance and efficiency trends. Again, carefully consider your family’s needs and how you do laundry. Do you need delayed start cycles? Touch pad controls? Dispensers for fabric softener that you don’t typically use? Extra features are nice but you will be paying more on the bottom line for each one. Be sure it is something that you will actually use. Think about your budget, too. And if you have more than $1,000 to spend on a washer, you might just be able to enjoy some of the new and innovative things we’re seeing in the laundry market today.

All washing machines today perform the same basic function. That’s why their control panels look similar. You’ll always have a normal cycle and usually at least eight or nine more specialty cycles and a way to adjust temperature, spin and soil settings. Before you even head to the appliance store much less buy a washer, take some time to consider these points to find the right washer for your household’s laundry needs.

There are three basic washer types:

High Efficiency Front-Load: HE front-load machines use less water and energy than top-loaders and usually offer more drum capacity so that larger loads can be washed. Front load washers feature automatic detergent, fabric softener and bleach dispensers.

High Efficiency Top-Load: HE top-load machines also use less water and energy than a standard top load machine. Since they have no centre agitator, there is more room in the wash basket for large items.

Standard Top-Load: Traditional machines are usually less expensive to purchase and still offer a wide range of sizes and features. However, standard washers use a much more water and have a higher operating cost per load (water costs) than high efficiency washers.

Merits of fully automated washing machines:

There is minimal human intervention. The machine automatically pours water for washing and rinsing, drying the clothes and the cycle is turned off automatically after completion.

These are equipped with the latest and most advanced washing machine technology.

Machines today come with Fuzzy logic and other multiple washing functions.

The traditional top loaders are more comfortable to load and cheaper to buy but front loaders are more energy efficient, use less water and offer better cleaning performance. LG and Samsung both make really good washers. Front loaders are good, but require routine cleaning to prevent mold from building up around the seal. When choosing a new washer, be sure to ask questions to find the perfect one just for you.

Washing machine capacity is in kilograms and refers to the weight of the dry load that it can hold. Some washing machines have larger drums than others and most models range in size from 5 kg to 12 kg. The idea is to buy a drum size you won’t struggle to fill. Drum capacity is a very important consideration for washing machines – the bigger the drum, the more you can wash. But bigger is not always better – the bigger the capacity, the more the washing machine will cost to buy and run.

Your choice of drum size depends on how many people live in your home. For single-person or couple households, look for a compact washer 5 to 6 kg. For a larger family of 4 people you may need an 8 – 9 kg drum. Drums with a 10-12kg capacity are best for very large households.

Most washing machines have big spin speeds, which range between 1000 to 1800 revolutions per minute (rpm). The higher spin speeds extract more water from the clothes, so drying times are reduced. Please note that higher spin speeds also tend to produce more creases too.

However, if you are not too keen on buying an expensive fully automatic washing machine. You can go for cost effective semi-automatic washing machines. You can use them even if you do not have a permanent water fixture. You can add water from Top using a bucket and they also use less electricity compared to fully automatic washing machines. If you check online sites, they show you hundreds of products, at least 10–12 of one single brand and then there are five or six brands that manufacture these machines.

You want the best range for your kitchen. You want the kind of home equipment that you can rely on to stay efficient and effective for longer. Buying kitchen appliances can be a daunting task when you look at all of the options, from energy saving to high-end designer models, to low-cost models, how do you choose? Which size is best suited to the needs of you and your kitchen? How much capacity do you need? We want to make sure our customers are well-informed before buying. DSL Appliances Repair team walk customers through a detailed selection process to understand their needs and wants, all the while taking kitchen design, budget, functionality, and constraints into consideration. All kitchen appliances such as dishwashers, range hoods, cooktops, and ovens co-ordinate perfectly with each other and will look good in your kitchen, no matter how many times you redecorate. If you have small children, your kitchen can be a hazardous place thanks to all those hot surfaces and easily triggered buttons. This is why child safety features are so important in kitchen ranges.

For instance, do you want an oven placed under bench below the cooktop or two ovens stacked in a wall tower? Do you prefer a concealed range hood that hides away under your cupboard or a robust canopy that makes a statement? Would you prefer a stainless steel look for your dishwasher or a fully integrated model that allows you to match the door with your cabinetry? From necessities like your fridge and oven (maybe even your dishwasher?) to gadgets you might splash out on like juicers and breadmakers, DSL Appliances reviews, tests, information and buying guides help you separate the best from the rest. With any appliance, before you get enamoured with all the whistles and bells of how beautiful it looks and all of the gadgets assess your lifestyle.

The refrigerator is one of the few appliances you own that has to run continuously. With refrigerators consider how many times you and your family cook and eat from home. You can cut down on running costs by choosing the right fridge or freezer for your needs. Higher end models that offer dual refrigeration, on-door controls, and energy efficiency may be more important for your families needs. While singles or those who don’t cook a lot may prefer a snazzy stainless steel or built-in model that looks fantastic but doesn’t need all of the accompaniments. Avoid buying power-hungry appliances, compare products to find the model that fits your requirements, and costs less to run.

Dishwashers are becoming seen as less of a luxury and more of a necessity in homes today. Washing dishes in a dishwasher instead of hand washing is more hygienic due to the higher temperature and save time, letting you get back to the dinner party instead of standing in front of the sink washing up. Choose models with an ‘eco’, ‘half load’ or ‘fast’ wash setting — they will help you save water and energy.

Buying a washing machine is not as straightforward as it used to be. What drum size do you need? How about spin speed? And what about energy efficiency? Start by measuring the intended installation space – making sure you pay close attention to depth, as machines often vary. Alternatively, if you want a two-in-one workhorse, washer-dryers combine both appliance functions. Washing machines are most efficient when carrying a full load, so choose a high-capacity drum if you’re a busy household and a smaller drum if you’re a one- or two-person household. Energy-saving machines may cost more now but are better for your wallet (and the planet) in the future.

These are just a few of the numerous options you have at your disposal when you choose the right home appliance for you. To learn more, get in touch with the DSL Appliances Repair team today and let us answer any questions you may have. Our friendly staff is happy to assist you with any questions to help you chose the products that are best suited to your design and needs. We offer installation by our trained professionals as well as extended maintenance on all major appliances.

At DSL Appliances, we service and repair a huge range of electrical appliance brands and models, from washing machines to electric ovens. There are many different reasons why appliances fail. We all have that fear. Your washing machine breaks in the middle of a cycle, flooding your laundry room. Your refrigerator shuts down after you just restocked with groceries.

Or your oven stops working just before a large holiday meal. The two top causes of electrical distribution failures — loose connections and parts and exposure to moisture — account for nearly half of all electrical losses. Inspection, testing, and servicing of equipment should be done on a regular basis — at least once every three years and more often for critical components.
What you need to know: A few preventive maintenance steps will help you get the maximum lifespan out of each appliance. The fundamental concept of Electrical Preventive Maintenance (EPM) is simple: Keep it clean, dry, and tight. There are simple appliance maintenance tasks that you can do on your own, with little investment (time or money).

Request An Appointment

Refrigerators and Freezers

Your refrigerator is likely the most used appliance in your kitchen and it may also be the largest consumer of energy, too. Refrigerators break down when doors don’t close tightly, forcing motors to work overtime to keep food cold. To test your door seal, close the door on a dollar bill: If the bill slips, you’ve got a problem that requires refrigerator maintenance. Magnetic strips embedded in gaskets around refrigerator doors make doors close snugly, but they routinely wear out and should be replaced or re-magnetized every couple of years. If messing around with the refrigerator door is beyond your pay grade, call a professional. Don’t ignore the filter indicator when it says it’s time for a replacement.

Washing Machines

Loose change banging around your washer drum can cause dents, chipped paint, and rust, so make sure to empty pockets before washing clothes. Also, maintain your washing machine by regularly cleaning or replacing filters that trap water sediment before it enters your machine. Filters, which look like thimbles, are located in the back where supply hoses attach to the machine. Remove hoses and either poke out debris with a tip of a flathead screwdriver, then remove and wash the filter, or replace it. And even though you want to spend as little time doing laundry as possible, stick to the manufacturer’s recommended load weight. Overstuffing your appliance can wear out the motor and drive belts.

Dryers

In addition to regularly cleaning out your dryer’s lint trap and exhaust hose, inspect the exterior vent — hot air must escape your house unimpeded. Make sure the hinged exterior vent pops open when the dryer runs. If it doesn’t, open the cover and scrape out lint with the end of a hanger or dryer vent brush. If your vent is louvered, clean slats with an old toothbrush.

Dishwashers

Here are ways to keep your dishwasher stress-free and long-lasting:

Prime your dishwasher by running the hot water in your sink before you begin the cycle. This will clean your dishes with hot water from the very start of the cycle.

Once a week, run your dishwasher empty except for a cup of vinegar, which will keep it shining and smelling fresh.

Clean out food traps regularly.

Wipe clean the seals around dishwasher doors.

Microwave

Food spills and particles can stick to the interior, which may cause the microwave to work less efficiently. Wipe microwave interior and door seals regularly with a damp cloth. On the underside of over-the-range microwaves, clean grease filters from the vent hood monthly by removing, soaking in soapy water, rinsing, drying and replacing. If your vent hood has a charcoal filter, replace it every 6 to 12 months.
